Before we begin, I would like to say that you’ll read here are things that has worked for me.

It does means that I am speaking from personal experience.

This post does not include random suggestions by some online gurus.

Neither will I fill this post with some BS.

I can’t stop to state the fact that the web host you’re using has a role to play when it comes to page speed.

You’ll never really understand this until you blog lagging and taking too much time to load.

2. Use A Clean, Fast and SEO Optimized Theme

In addition to having a good website host, this is one factor you must pay attention to.

If you visit the WordPress theme directory, you’ll find a whole lot of themes.

You should know that most of all these fancy looking themes are not what you need.

Why, you may want to ask…

This is because most themes are packed with extra functionalities that your blog does not need.

Some of these themes comes with excess coding which makes the theme’s file to be large slows down your blog.

What Is The Best Theme For Blogging?

The two best themes I recommend for blogging and bloggers are GeneratePress and Schema.

This is because these themes are fast, clean and SEO optimised.

In addition, they are light weight and comes with less codes.

3. Compress Images Before Uploading To Your Blog

Images help to add extra design to a blog.

Imagine if this post was just filled with long blocks of text only, you’ll probably lose interest in reading.

But the use of images has helped to break up the texts and make it more colourful.

The images has also helped to convey the intent of this post, hence making it more interesting to read.

Despite the importance of image to a blog post, it does not mean that you are to load up your website with every images you find.

Before uploading an image to your blog, try to compress it and bring down its size.

This will reduce the time your blog takes to load.

This is because, before your blog loads it will also load its content including the images on it.

Now imaging if the size of the images on your blog are too large

…it will be slowing down your blog.

To be able to compress your images, use Tinypng.

Tinypng can reduce your image size by up to 60% of its original size.

This means that if an image size is 300kb, Tinypng can bring it down to 120kb.

4. Use Image Smushing Plugin

This is one hack that has worked extremely well for me.

It’s like a double barrel approach that I have been using here at Blog Carrot.

So, how does this actually work?

It’s simply installing on your blog an image smushing plugin or a plugin that can compress images.

Continuing with our example above, on uploading the already compressed image, the image smushing plugin will further reduce its size to 80kb.

This means that you have been able to bring down the size of the image from 300kb to 80kb.

That is a 73% reduction in the image size, thereby making it highly optimised.

The plugin I use for this Imagify.

With Imagify, you can further crash down an image to an ultra-size.

Just use Tinypng first to compress the image, then upload the compressed image and Imagify will further reduce its size.

5. Delete Unused Images

If you are active blogger, you must experience this scenario

“You upload an image on your blog, but for one reason or the other, you decide not to use that image”

What most bloggers does is to allow the previous image to sit on their blog’s media directory.

The more unused images you have on your blog, the more space those images are taking up.

This is simply because those unused images will still be found in the root directory of your blog.

All of these will add up to the bandwidth of your blog, which will slow down the page speed of your blog.

It is best to permanently delete all unused images from your blog.

To be able to do this, observe the steps below:

First, hover your mouse and click on media from the left hand side of your dashboard.

Secondly, click on the image you intend to permanently delete.

Finally click on “delete permanently” to delete the image.

When this is done, the image will not be on the root files of your blog.

6. Enable Image Lazy Load

If you visit this post, you will notice that it is a very long post with several images.

Try scrolling down the post, what did you notice?

You would have noticed that the images only loads when you scroll to the point where they are.

That feature is simply regarded as image lazy load.

This ensures that not all images are loaded on your blog at a go.

The images are only loaded when the viewer scrolls to it.

With this feature on, your blog or website page load speed is greatly improved.

No need exhausting bandwidth on images that a viewer may never get to.

This also ensures that only necessary images are loaded on your blog or website, not all images.

How To Enable Image Lazy Load On Your Blog

To have this feature enabled on your website, it only requires a plugin.

The lazy load plugin

Search for it on the WordPress directory, install and activate on your blog.

Once activated, image lazy load is set up and running on your blog.

You can also use WP Rocket plugin for this as well.

7. Use Less Plugins

Most bloggers always fall for the shiny object syndrome of wanting to use any fancy plugin they found.

This mistake is mostly common with newbie bloggers.

The truth of the matter is that you only need few basic plugins to run your blog.

If you go to this post on how to start a blog, you’ll see the plugins I recommend for blogging.

Do you even know that there are plugins that can do the job of multiple plugins together?

Those are the type of plugins that is recommended to use.

It will help to reduce the amount of plugins that you have on your blog.

The less plugin you have, the less files to be stored on your blog and the less time it will take for your blog to load.

8. Delete Unused Plugins

Most bloggers are known to jump from one plugin to another.

After installing a particular plugin, on finding another better one, they deactivate the old plugin and install the new one.

This they do without deleting the previous plugin from their blog.

You should know that the deactivated plugin may not be active on your site, but resides in your blog’s folder.

With this in place, the plugin still gets loaded and takes up bandwidth.

However, it is best advised to delete ant plugin that is not in use.

9. Compress Videos Before Uploading To Your Blog

Sometimes, videos are needed to better explain certain concepts.

That is why tend to see videos on some blogs.

In addition, videos seems to be to create when compared to writing a post.

Within 15 – 20 minutes, you should have finished shooting a video on a particular topic.

This does not however means that you should upload the raw video file on your blog.

It is however best to compress your videos through onlinevideocompress.com when you are done recording it.

In addition to compressing your videos, you can decide to rather host the videos outside of your blog and just provide a link to where the video is hosted from your blog.
